Collisions Every Minute?

I have to wonder how many of these drivers have never driven in an adverse condition before.  It is not acceptable to report that a one point a collision took place every minute.  90% all collisions are driver error…the remaining 10% is comprised of road conditions and mechanical failure…lets do the math..9 out 10 times…the human did something to cause the crash.  Funny how a person on their way to the car slips on the ice or snow but disconnects when they get behind the wheel!!  http://livenews.thestar.com/Event/Toronto_Now_-_Jan_13_2012

Driver’d Ed…worth the investment.

Recently Lorraine Sommerfeld sat through my September Weekend Driving School Program in Oakville.  On breaks we had the opportunity to chat about how the DE industry has evolved….or not.  To make a long blog short! that was why she was here at DriveWise Oaville. See how we faired in her article…  http://www.wheels.ca/article/800580

Can driving simulators every replace the real thing?

This is a great article by Ian Laws of the Toronto Star Wheels section.  It asks the question of whether or not driving simulators can replace a the real thing.   http://www.wheels.ca/Columnists/article/799916

Does your New Driver know how to stop?

Does your New Driver know how to stop the vehicle in the case of brake failure?  Although the vehicle is usually mechanically fit at the time of a crash, brake failure is at the top of the list for mechanical failure when the crash happens….at least according to the 2006 MTO Road Safety Report.   Hence one more reason why your new driver should take DriveWise Oakville.  We simulate in car with the insrtuctor how to stop the vehicle if brake failure occurs.  Check out Eric Lai’s comment .http://www.wheels.ca/columns/article/794271  It takes practice.

Move Over Law

This past long weekend I was returning along the East Bound lanes on the QEW into Oakville. The traffic volume was medium. If you are familiar with this stretch of the Freeway, you know that it now has HOV lanes. I knew that this weekend, the OPP were cracking down on motorists that did not obey the Move Over Law and was reminded of this as a cruiser (roof top lights on) came down the HOV lane. I commented to my wife that this would be interesting to watch. BTW I was in the right most lane doing the limit! As this cruise approached the traffic in the HOV lane I was amazed how the drivers didn’t even flinch. Not a indication or attempt to move over. The cruiser did not have room on the left shoulder to pass so they straddled the HOV lane marking that separates it from the fast lane. That seemed to work for a while. As we watched it move through traffic it would move to the HOV lane then cross over to the right into the fast lane to negotiate the traffic. I was in awe. I then realized that these motorists probably…other than the obvious not monitoring their mirrors..were probably confused. They probably did not want to cross over the lane markings of the HOV that prohibits passing….made sense! Yesterday as I found the answer in the Wheels Section of The Star..http://www.wheels.ca/News%20and%20Features/article/799166 The short answer is found in the fourth last paragraph where it indicates that you can cross over the HOV lane marking in the case where you must Move Over…it is the exception..
